A radome is a weatherproof, electromagnetically transparent building structure that protects radar and antenna systems from extreme weather environments such as wind, blowing sand, snow, ice, rain, ultraviolet sunlight, temperature, fungus, and corrosion.

Why a Radome?
A ground-based radome is often a valuable addition for large SATCOM systems as it protects the antenna system from environmental factors like wind, rain, ice, dust, and salt, which can otherwise degrade performance and cause mechanical wear. By shielding the antenna, the radome reduces wind-induced pointing errors and structural deformation, leading to more stable RF performance—especially important at higher frequencies such as Ka and Q bands. They withstand harsh climates and offer both physical security and concealment by obscuring the antenna from view. When combined with internal environmental control using HVAC systems, radomes can maintain stable temperature and humidity conditions, further improving equipment reliability and longevity. Overall, radomes often improve system availability and reduce lifecycle costs, making them a practical choice for many antenna installations.
